The Haywood County Schools Board of Education recognized local students who attended the North Carolina Governor's School and announced the district's Advanced Placement award recipients.
Miss Inman introduced the Governor's School students. The North Carolina Governor's School is a four-week residential summer program for nominated, competitively selected gifted and talented high school students; about 1,900 students applied and roughly 800 were chosen statewide, the presenter said. The board recognized three local students who attended this summer: Cooper Crook of Pisgah High School (natural science), Dev Patel of Tuscola High School (mathematics), and James Cloninger of Haywood Early College (theatre), who was unable to attend the meeting because of a school event. Cooper Crook said the experience "was an overall just an amazing experience that was able to allow me to reignite the passion for learning that I have." Dev Patel noted both social and academic benefits from attending.
The board also listed dozens of students who earned AP Scholar distinctions, AP Scholar with Honor and AP Scholar with Distinction, and AP Capstone certificates and diplomas. Presenters said the Hammett Charitable Fund pays tuition for students selected to attend Governor's School and thanked the Haywood County Schools Foundation for support of student opportunities. The recognitions were presented; no board action was required.
