Wylie resident urges better communication with sheriff after budget workshop

Barbara Dawn Lyke of Wylie addressed the Commissioners Court during general public comment to urge improved communication between the commissioners and the Collin County Sheriff's Department after an August budget workshop.
“My name is Barbara Dawn Lyke. My husband's name is Dan Lyke. Our home address is 130 Squirrel Ridge, Wylie, Texas, 75098,” Lyke said, then summarized her view of the county’s growth and the demands it places on government services. She told the court that Sheriff Jim Skinner had invited the commissioners to visit the sheriff’s department to see operational needs firsthand and that the sheriff had written several letters to the court seeking assistance. “The sheriff also talked about the many letters he had written to the commissioner's court before the budget workshop for assistant needs for the sheriff's department and received only 1 letter back from the commissioner court to the sheriff,” she said.
Lyke called for better communication going forward and said she has seen signs of improvement when viewing subsequent court videos. “Hopefully, with the year 2025 and into the 2026, before budget workshop in 2026, the doors for better communication will be done by all,” she said. She ended by praising the sheriff’s department for its service to Collin County residents.
The court did not take formal action on Lyke’s remarks; her comments were recorded as public comment on non-agenda matters.
