The Lake Jackson City Council on Sept. 15 authorized the mayor and city manager to execute new opioid settlement agreements, including settlements with secondary manufacturers under the national opioid settlement program.
City staff told council that several settlement packets have continued to arrive and that signing does not, in the city's view, require additional funds or staff time. "It just takes a signature," said Sherry Russell during the discussion, noting some settlements require only a formal sign-off and the city does not expect obligations of money or staff time from these particular documents.
Council members approved a blanket authorization so the city would not need to return to council each time an additional settlement filing arrived. The motion to permit the mayor and city manager to execute new opioid settlements was made and seconded; the mayor called the vote and announced the motion carried.
The measure allows city officials to accept and sign subsequent settlement documents so long as the agreements do not obligate city funds or staff time beyond what council has already approved. Staff said the action is intended to streamline processing of additional manufacturers that join national settlement programs and submit paperwork for local sign-offs.
