Parks board reviews playground, trail, trees, pickleball and maintenance projects

Parks staff updated the Mitchell Park Board on a range of capital and maintenance items, from playground procurement and a tree-planting grant to tennis court refinishing, pickleball concrete work and repairs to park railings and gazebos.
Staff said a grant application for a trail along the railroad is "not looking good" but another round of funding may be available; the playground request for Gaynor Park finished in the top half of applicants and staff intend to order playground equipment in winter for installation next year to take advantage of lower pricing. The packet and discussion referenced a planned playground procurement and winter ordering to reduce costs.
Parks staff described repairs at Rotary Parks railings and gazebo and said courts 1 through 4 closest to the baseball field will be refinished. Pickleball work included concrete pours and painting; staff noted a dispute over paint lines when some portable nets and line markings were placed too close to tennis service lines, and those lines were later removed after feedback from tennis stakeholders.
A tree-planting grant will bring about 80 containerized trees to several park and trail locations, including cemetery perimeter plantings and areas along the new 1.4-mile trail toward Lions Point Park. Staff said they will flag exact planting sites with the state forester and that species under consideration include lindens, hybrid elms, honey locust and Kentucky coffee tree.
Thomas and other staff also reported on repairs at the recreation facility: they used a water test with the fire department to locate leaks in a new hallway roof and expect a roofer to return to seal flashing and add caps around HVAC curbing. The indoor playground and program spaces are being readied for a public opening schedule that staff expect to publish in late September/October timeframe; staff noted a soft opening for after-school programs and internal use while final setup continues.
Staff also briefed the board on staffing: Jeremys last day is Oct. 31 and the hiring window is open through the 21st, with interviews not yet started. The board discussed meeting scheduling to accommodate staff leave and conferences.
No new appropriations were proposed during the update; staff said many items are funded through previously approved capital or grant allocations and routine maintenance budgets.
