Library director details budget shifts, staffing gaps and summer reading gains; board approves minutes with corrections

Joy Holt, the Carson City Library director, reported to the Library Board of Trustees that she moved funds within the library’s proposed budget to increase the books and periodicals line so the city’s contribution would meet the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) match requirement. "I moved money from contract services at the start of the budget . . . and so I moved money to get us closer to that overall amount that you see under the 50645, books, periodicals, and publication," Holt said, adding that the reallocation helps maintain eligibility for Library Services and Technology Act funding.

Why it matters: The shift affects how the library budgets for digital and print collections. Holt said the library spent roughly $82,000 on OverDrive/digital materials this year and purchased about 5,500 digital items; those costs drove part of the collection-development and budget conversation.
