Board discusses bus-stop lighting, Duke Energy delays and nearby city sidewalk proposal by Hernando High

Board members discussed safety measures for students traveling to and from bus stops and sidewalks near Hernando High School during the July 29 informal meeting.
Missus Hawkins, a board member, said district personnel are working to add street lights at bus stop and traffic areas where students are picked up in the dark, but progress is gradual and funding is not currently allocated. She said many identified locations are in county right-of-way and will require authorization from the Board of County Commissioners to proceed.
Hawkins said district staff contacted Duke Energy for information; she said a Duke representative declined to provide details without knowing who will cover the cost. Hawkins added that a regional Duke Energy representative later apologized and asked district staff to contact him.
The board praised a private partner identified in the meeting (referred to as Lickucci/Liguhi in the discussion) for providing information and community support. Hawkins said the district lacks an MSBU or interlocal agreement to fund lights and that the school board does not currently have allocated funding for these additions.
Mister Johnson reported that Brooksville City Council is looking into installing sidewalks on North Avenue, which ends near Hernando High School. He said there were “either 26 or 36 incidents” where children were clipped along North Avenue and that sidewalks could help. Johnson suggested the board consider sending a representative to the city council to coordinate.
No formal action or vote was recorded; Hawkins recommended approaching the BOCC for authorization and staff follow-up with Duke Energy’s regional representative.
