Blount County Commission elects Jared Anderson chair; Nick Bright named chair pro tem; John Giles becomes parliamentarian

The Blount County Commission elected Commissioner Jared Anderson as chair at its Sept. 18 meeting and chose Commissioner Nick Bright as chair pro tem and Commissioner John Giles as parliamentarian.

The leadership votes followed nominations from commissioners and roll-call voting. Commissioner Carver nominated Jared Anderson for chair; a motion to close nominations was moved by Commissioner Wright and seconded by Commissioner Reagan. After the roll call, the clerk announced 14 yes votes and the motion to elect Anderson carried. Anderson thanked the commission after the vote: "Thank you all very much. I appreciate your confidence and your support. And, once again, I will do my best to live up to your expectations," he said.

The commission then opened nominations for chair pro tem. Commissioner Acard nominated Commissioner Nick Bright; Commissioner Davis seconded. Nominations were closed and the clerk reported a roll-call result that gave Bright the position. "Congratulations, Commissioner Bright. You are our county commission chair pro tem," the clerk said after announcing the outcome.

The body next considered the parliamentarian position. Commissioner Carver nominated John Giles; the nomination was seconded by Mr. McMahon and, after a roll call, the clerk announced that Giles had the nomination with 13 votes. The commission confirmed Giles as parliamentarian.

The votes followed the commission's procedural rules for nominations and roll-call tallies. No formal debate or extended discussion about leadership qualifications was recorded during the nominations and votes. The new leadership will preside over upcoming committee appointments, budget work and other items the commission schedules this fall.

The meeting convened with 14 members present, and the clerk conducted roll calls for each vote.
