Resident urges Boulder to protect Iris Fields after county lists park and municipal buildings for sale

At the Sept. 4 meeting, local father and North Boulder Little League coach Nick Kerwin told the council he opposed the county’s recent decision to list Iris Fields — a longtime community baseball field — for sale and urged council to protect the site in any future zoning changes.
Kerwin said Iris Fields has been a neighborhood park for more than 70 years, hosting youth baseball and other community sports. “I am very much opposed to selling a public park,” he told council, asking the city not to support any development or zoning change that would remove or alter the fields without explicit written protections.
City staff acknowledged they have heard of the county’s intent and said the city will monitor any land-use request and will notify council as the county proceeds. “We will follow that, we will monitor that, we will certainly let you know as that moves forward,” a staff member said.
Council members asked staff questions about the city’s authority over zoning for the property; staff answered that they will follow up with additional information for council when appropriate. No council action or formal city policy change was proposed at the meeting; the issue was recorded for staff monitoring and future notice to council and the public.
