The Board of Zoning Appeals on Sept. 11 granted a 10-year special-use approval allowing continued occupancy of 2066 South 30th Street as a tavern, after the applicant explained the property's prior occupancy had lapsed and the current owners had bought the building three years earlier.
Victoria McKernan, who identified herself at the hearing as the applicant and owner, said the use had been established for many years but an occupancy certificate had lapsed. "I guess the occupancy expired. We bought the building 3 years ago," McKernan told the board. City staff said the tavern use historically existed on site; the current proceeding was triggered by the lapse in occupancy and related licensing steps.
Board members noted the property's long history as a tavern and the absence of new objections in the hearing record. After discussion, a motion to approve the special use for 10 years passed unanimously; recorded ayes included Board Member Kushel, Board Member Curran, Board Member Recker, Vice Chair Smyski and Chair Muhlenberg.
The board's order will include the conditions listed in the hearing summary; the applicant was reminded that additional licensing and inspections by relevant city departments are required before reopening or continuing operations.
