Superintendent Mike Bellville told the Fairfield Union Local School District board that a consultant study of traffic flow around Bremen Elementary found no easy fixes without major construction and that the district is implementing operational steps to reduce congestion during drop-off and pickup.
Bellville said an outside firm, Kleiners, described the study as “the most difficult traffic study that they'd ever done,” noting limited site options and that meaningful improvements would require major construction. To reduce morning congestion, the district opened building doors earlier and adjusted staff schedules; Bellville said those changes “seem to have helped tremendously.”
Afternoon pickup remains challenging because the drop-off area doubles as the playground during the school day. Bellville said the district keeps gates closed during the day, opens them at 3:00 p.m. for pickup and asked drivers not to park on Angle Street waiting for gates to open. The district sent messages asking drivers to “circle the block” instead of parking and reported the sheriff’s department was present to encourage compliance. Bellville said coordination with Bremen Mayor Taylor and the village council is ongoing.
He told the board the district will keep monitoring the situation and that more substantial changes would require construction or other major interventions beyond the district’s immediate control.
