Board updates vehicle policies to cover school buses and district “white fleet,” adds replacement guidance

At the meeting following the budget workshop, district transportation staff presented two policy updates to the school board intended to modernize how the district manages and replaces vehicles.

Policy 8670, previously titled for school bus maintenance, was revised to broaden its scope to cover the district’s entire vehicle fleet (the so-called “white fleet,” which includes vans and service vehicles) in addition to yellow school buses. Transportation staff told the board the update is intended to create a single maintenance umbrella for procurement, insurance credits and consistent standards across vehicle types.

A companion update, 8670.01, establishes guidance for vehicle replacement. Board presenters said the district had no formal replacement standard for non‑bus vehicles and that some vehicles in the white fleet had model years or mileage that warranted a replacement policy. The revised language sets an operational standard used to guide replacement decisions (the policy uses permissive wording such as “may” rather than hard limits), and staff said the approach will allow the district to preserve service reliability while avoiding unnecessary expenditures.

Board members briefly described the changes as housekeeping and thanked transportation staff for bringing the items forward. The updates were presented as administrative and procurement best-practice adjustments rather than programmatic changes that would affect classroom services.
