Staff plans demolition of substandard properties including 618 Maple; case expected in fiscal year 2026

City staff informed the Bellaire Building and Standards Commission on July 24 that several properties in the city are substandard and that staff plans to pursue demolition of at least one property in fiscal year 2026.
The building official reported that a property at 618 Maple has an open rear door and unsecured windows, a large number of feral cats, and structural unsoundness. "We'll be looking to demolish that in fiscal year 2026, so sometime in October," the official said. The official added another case on Howard Street likely will be brought forward as well because the structures have not been secured.
Staff described neighbor complaints about the condition and said the structures are not secured, creating hazards and ongoing nuisance concerns. The commission did not take a final demolition vote at the meeting; staff described the matter as forthcoming and scheduled for the next fiscal year.
No demolition contract awards, timelines beyond "sometime in October" of FY2026, or budget amounts were specified at the meeting. The commission asked for updates and staff indicated cases will be presented to the commission in subsequent meetings.
