A representative of the Brimfield Community Cupboard informed trustees that both state and federal reductions in support to the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank will reduce the volume of food available to local partner agencies.
Bill Anderson said the state cut 1 million pounds and $1 million, and the federal government also reduced allocations, forcing the food bank to purchase more food rather than rely on donated or redistributed product. “Food Bank will run out of money by the end of next year, short of donations,” Anderson said, and asked the community to contribute funds or canned goods to sustain local distributions.
Why it matters: Local food pantries rely on regional food-bank redistribution; cuts at the food-bank level can translate into reduced distributions at the township level, increasing demand on local donations and volunteers.
Trustees thanked Anderson and the meeting record indicates township police and other departments run periodic food drives; no formal township allocation was proposed at the meeting.
