Emory participants discuss previous lot-cleaning effort, fire-department waivers and property cleanup

At the Emory planning meeting, participants discussed past property-cleanup efforts that used a letter-and-waiver process to get permission from absentee owners to burn or clear lots. Speakers recalled an earlier program in which letters were sent to owners and landowners signed waivers that allowed the fire department to carry out or oversee burn/cleanup activity.

One participant asked whether the fire department still had the same role and described that earlier work had been coordinated by individuals named in the discussion (for example, Gary Petty and an earlier fire chief the speaker believed was Randy Lake). Speaker 1, a staff member, said the fire department follows the fire code and that the mayor’s permission or a signed waiver from owners had been part of prior arrangements: “We had the attorneys draw it up for the fire department or the landowners to sign… they got to sign the waiver if they wanted something burned out or whatever.”

Participants noted that the fire department’s approval is governed by the fire code and that any updated process should be discussed with the town council; one participant suggested bringing the question to the council for suggestions to include in the draft plan.
