Stanford presents donation to support Barrett Community Center after development plan stall

Stanford University representatives presented a donation to Belmont on Sept. 9 and said the university remains committed to working with the city following the decision not to pursue the previously proposed Stanford at Belmont plan.
Lucy Wicks, representing Stanford University, presented a donation to the City of Belmont during the Sept. 9 council meeting and said Stanford remains engaged with local institutions despite changes to earlier development plans.
“While Stanford is not going to be that point of pride for you all, we really do hope that this contribution can support your efforts for the Barrett Community Center,” Wicks said. She thanked city staff and leadership and said Stanford hopes to continue partnerships with the city and local school districts.
Council members thanked Stanford for the contribution and for the relationship built during the multi-year planning process. Mayor Mates and other council members said the university’s participation left a “strong impression” on city staff and residents even though the earlier Stanford at Belmont plan did not move forward.
The presentation was ceremonial: speakers noted the donation but did not announce new city funding commitments or changes to the Barrett Community Center project timetable. Council staff arranged for a photo and a ceremonial oversized check.
No formal council action was requested or taken during the presentation.
