Daggett County commissioners hear clinic construction update, approve minutes and weigh fairground lighting request

Daggett County commissioners on Aug. 19 received updates on the new county clinic's construction, were told self-help housing closings have occurred, approved the Aug. 12 meeting minutes and discussed a sheriff's request to install lighting at the fairground gate before upcoming events.

The progress report on the county clinic came from Bart Jensen, who said crews have placed geotextile fabric and rock and were working through groundwater issues around the site. "We've been working through a few details on the future sump that that would go in the mechanical room, to to take care of any water that, that does, come up that way," Jensen said. He added the contractor is installing foundation drains and that "the elevator pit will be poured likely tomorrow."

The commission also heard that a "self help housing" project is moving toward construction after some closings occurred, and that the Municipal Building Authority project has begun site work. Those updates were presented during the commission's regular issue-updates segment.

Sheriff Bailey asked the commission to install a permanent light at the ticket/gate shack at the fairgrounds ahead of a concert and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeo. "You talked last year about putting a light up at the gate ... If we could get a light in there before, I guess, our next event ... it would really help the people working that gate because they're having to use flashlights to to check for open containers leaving and stuff like that," Sheriff Bailey said, adding the request is an officer-safety issue: "It's an officer safety thing for me because I've got my guys checking for beers going out, focus and they're having to use flashlights all the time."

Discussion at the dais and among staff covered interim fixes and options: staff said the ticket shack currently uses a generator and that a power box near the gate allows for an extension cord; one participant offered to bring a solar motion-sensor light as a temporary measure. Suggestions included mounting a double floodlight on a fence post or using portable lighting if a permanent installation cannot be completed in time. Commissioners noted the concert scheduled for the coming weekend featuring Charlie Jenkins and the PRCA rodeo the following week when stressing the timing.

Commissioners formally handled two procedural actions at the start of the meeting. The body voted to go in and out of the Redevelopment Agency (RDA) meeting and later voted to approve the Aug. 12 meeting minutes for the Daggett County Commission and the Daggett County RDA. Both motions carried on voice votes; the chair called for "All in favor?" and the record shows affirmative responses.

Fire restrictions were also mentioned; a participant noted restrictions remain in place and said the Ashley area has "absolutely no fires." The commission recessed at 9:20 a.m. to conduct a Municipal Building Authority meeting and planned to return after that session.
