Mt. Diablo Unified appoints Brian Lawrence as interim Area 4 trustee

The Mt. Diablo Unified School District Board of Education on Aug. 4 voted to appoint Brian Lawrence as the interim trustee for Trustee Area 4 following interviews with four applicants and public comment.
Board President Linda Mayo announced the outcome after the vote: "The motion is in favor of appointing Trustee Lawrence to the vacant position ... 3 in favor and 1 against," and the board then administered the oath of office.
The board structured the evening to interview all four applicants in a randomized order, following a process Superintendent Dr. Clark said was recommended by the California School Boards Association and intended to be “transparent and random.” Each candidate answered a set of 10 questions with timed responses on topics including the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), budget oversight, community engagement, and adherence to the Brown Act.
Public speakers at the start of the meeting urged the board to appoint Lawrence. Christie Palutzian, a resident of Trustee Area 4, told trustees she supported Lawrence’s appointment and said he would have “very little ramp up time” because of his past board experience. Linda Ortega, president of the Mount Diablo Education Association, told the board she was confident Lawrence had “the necessary qualifications” and experience with labor negotiations.
All four candidates addressed how they would balance fiscal stewardship with district priorities. Eloy Vidalas described his experience in regulatory work and said he would "press pause and ask for more information" if details were incomplete. Brian Lawrence, a former board member, highlighted his previous service in the district and said he would prioritize student outcomes and community engagement; in closing he said, "I will be transparent. I will be responsive, and I will do what I always believe is in the best interest of the students of this district." Albert Anderson emphasized concerns about student achievement and discipline; candidate Whitmarsh cited prior board experience and emphasized balancing employee and student needs.
Trustees deliberated in open session after the interviews. Trustee Deborah Mason moved to appoint Lawrence; the motion was seconded and then approved by the board with the recorded tally of three votes in favor and one against. The board president administered the oath, and Lawrence briefly addressed the board and audience after being sworn in.
The interviews and appointment were framed by discussion of district priorities the candidates repeatedly cited: implementation and accountability under LCAP goals, maintaining fiscal solvency amid state funding variability, and increasing community engagement by creating multiple pathways for parent and stakeholder input. During his answers, Vidalas referenced the board’s prior decision on an unrelated matter — the district’s nonrenewal of the American Tower lease for KVHS 90.5 FM and the transfer of its FCC license — as an example of fiscal stewardship and community considerations.
The board noted the process was limited to filling the interim vacancy; the appointee will serve until the district’s next election or until a different process produces a permanent trustee, according to district practice explained at the meeting.
