Eagle Scout leads maintenance project at Pioneer Park, plans further work on time capsule and pavilion

Nathan Harris, an Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 314, briefed the Mendon City Council on Sept. 11 about a recent Eagle Scout service project at Pioneer Park.
Harris described work completed and next steps: volunteers (he reported 10'12 participants at a recent workday) cleared bushes obscuring the park sign, pruned vegetation around the statue, sanded and stained the pavilion fascia and applied a resin coating inside the pavilion to protect wood from weathering. Harris said the project team completed a workday on Sept. 10 to sand and stain and to protect the ground with coverings during staining.
Harris also raised concerns about a time capsule on the park monument that shows surface cracks. He said he consulted an identified mayor of Brigham City (spoken in the meeting as "DJ Bot") who advised possibly lifting the lid and resealing it and recommended a product to remove rust; the mayor of Brigham City also offered assistance that might include a crane to lift the lid. Harris said he had approval for his Eagle project plan on Sept. 6 and that cleanup work has already restored the sign's visibility from the road.
Council members thanked Harris for the volunteer work and reminded him to consult Paul Willie about the time capsule construction details before any lid removal. City staff and council offered logistical support and suggested follow-up coordination with the donor and the city if lifting the time capsule lid requires heavier equipment.
