Jay Reed, a Roseville resident, used the Sept. 3 public-comment period to urge the City Council to adopt a resolution opposing Proposition 50, which he said would eliminate or reduce the authority of California's independent redistricting commission.
Reed said Roseville already has an independent redistricting commission for its own city districts and argued that Proposition 50 would return map-drawing authority to politicians with a vested interest in the outcomes. He warned that passage could split Western Placer County into three separate congressional districts and said the change would "weaken" the region's single voice in Congress. He asked the council to "carry on the tradition by adopting a resolution to oppose Prop 50" to signal local support for transparency in redistricting.
The comment was made during general public comment; the council took no immediate action on the request during the Sept. 3 meeting.
