“So far we’ve tried 31 murder trials to verdict this year. We’re 28 for 31, which puts us at 90%,” Meares said, adding the office expects to at least match last year’s total of 48 homicide trials. He told councilors advances in investigative technology and social media evidence have made identifying suspects faster but have increased the frequency of self‑defense claims at trial.
The prosecutor said 52 homicide cases were filed this year and that 26 of those defendants had never been arrested as an adult prior to the current charge. “That’s 50 percent of the individuals that we’ve charged with murder,” Meares said.
