The Columbia City Park Board on Aug. 28 approved most of the parks’ requested field and tournament dates for the coming season but removed the April 24 date from the schedule.
The board voted by voice to approve the schedule after staff described requests from travel and tournament organizers that often reserve multiple sequential days — typically Friday through Sunday — to accommodate large fields of teams. “They ask for those days to be reserved so they can have that opportunity,” a staff speaker said during the discussion, explaining why some single dates show only one calendar day even though events often span a weekend.
Board members and staff discussed how large tournaments can require Friday play to finish a weekend’s slate; one speaker noted that prior tournaments have required Friday starts when 30 to 68 teams participated. The board also reviewed its practice of charging a “reasonable fee” for field rentals to cover line-stripping, mowing and other maintenance; board members said the fee helps maintain fields and schedule use. A staff member told the board she had printed the relevant language from the Indiana Code showing that public spaces can be made available free but that fees are allowable to cover necessary support for specific activities.
A motion to approve the calendar dates with the April 24 date removed passed on a voice vote. The board did not record a roll-call tally in the minutes.
Why it matters: Columbia City’s fields host travel tournaments that bring visiting teams and spectators; reserving dates affects local recreation schedules and can complicate make-up dates for rainouts.
What’s next: Staff will finalize the calendar with tournament organizers and continue coordinating opening-day planning and field maintenance.
