South Washington County Schools board approves 200-series policy updates

At its Aug. 21 meeting, the South Washington County Schools Board voted to approve multiple changes to its 200-series board policies, the board’s superintendent said.

Superintendent Julie Nielsen told the board she was “bringing forth the 200 series policies that are board policies, and asking for approval,” and noted the policies had been reviewed at the board’s Aug. 7 workshop. Nielsen identified specific items proposed for change in Policy 203: she said the district would remove three numbered pieces from Policy 203 and convert them into a procedure that will be reviewed at a future workshop.

Nielsen asked for approval of the following policies: Policy 203 (operations of the school board, with certain subparts moved to procedure), Policy 205 (open meetings and closed meetings), Policy 206 (public participation in school board meetings, with an associated procedure), Policy 207 (public hearings), Policy 208 (development, adoption and implementation of policies) and Policy 209 (code of ethics for board members). She told the board those policies had been previously reviewed and that procedures related to some policies would be presented for further discussion at a subsequent workshop.

A motion to approve the policies was made by board member Sharon Van Leer and seconded by board member Simi Petnayak. The board chair called for a voice vote; all present members answered “Aye” and the motion passed.

The board did not adopt the separate procedures at this meeting; Nielsen said the draft procedures would be presented for further conversation at the board’s next workshop.
