Sunset City Council certifies primary results, approves nominees for November ballot

At a special meeting Aug. 26, the Sunset City Council adopted Resolution 2025-16 to certify the municipal 2025 primary election results and accepted the city clerk’s reported vote totals; the roll-call vote was unanimous.
SUNSET — The Sunset City Council voted unanimously Aug. 26 to adopt Resolution 2025-16, formally certifying the results of the municipal 2025 primary election and accepting the nominees to appear on the November ballot.
The action came at a special meeting called to canvass the primary. Office Manager Sump told the council that “by Utah Code 28-4-301, it requires the council to act as the board of canvassers to certify the official results” and then read the city’s reported turnout and vote totals. The council then took a roll-call vote to adopt the resolution.
Sump reported that Sunset City had 2,306 active registered voters and that 473 ballots were cast, a 20.51% turnout. Of those ballots, 463 were by mail, eight were cast in person on election day and two were provisional. Countywide turnout was 21.77%, Sump said.
Sump read the vote totals reported for candidates in the municipal primary: Raymond Harold Chapman Jr., 59; Ronald Fish Wilson, 91; Nancy (surname read variously), 285; David Silos Aguer, 78; Cornell Wilkes Thomas, 142; and Catherine R. Hunter, 216. The council accepted the clerk’s reading of the results and proceeded to certify them, the minutes show.
Presiding officials then carried out the roll-call vote on Resolution 2025-16. Council member Wrigley moved to adopt the resolution; Council member Bartley seconded. Council members Carlson, Thompson, Wrigley and Bartley voted yes; the council declared the vote unanimous and approved the resolution.
During the meeting Sump also read the list of candidates the clerk said were declared nominated to appear on the November ballot, as it was read at the meeting: “Nancy, Marco Smalling, Catherine r Hunter, Cornell Wilkes Thomas, and Ralph Fish Wilson.” The transcript contains inconsistent spellings and readings of several candidate names; the article lists the vote totals above as they were reported by the clerk at the meeting.
A candidate present, Ronald Fish Wilson, received a certificate of nomination during the meeting. Council members reminded attendees that mailed ballots allow up to two votes per ballot for the office at issue and directed anyone with questions about campaigning rules or signage to consult Office Manager Sump or the Davis County website, as noted during the meeting.
The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn moved by Council member Bartley, seconded by Council member Ridley and approved by voice vote.
Next steps: the certified results will be reflected on the November ballot as processed by the county and city election officials; the council did not take any additional policy actions at the special canvass meeting.
