Council postpones decision on Pershing Boulevard no-parking zone after safety questions

The council debated a proposed resolution to establish a no-parking zone on the west side of the 1200 block of Pershing Boulevard. Councilmember Davis introduced the measure and said the proposal grew from a neighborhood traffic-study process in which neighbors had indicated support.
Members discussed whether the change should apply only to one block, as proposed, or be expanded to include corner setback restrictions (for example a 30- to 50-foot no-parking-from-corner restriction) to improve sight lines at the intersection with 13th Avenue North. Council members and staff noted Pershing is narrow for much of its length and that parked cars on both sides can restrict sight lines, particularly approaching the stop sign near 13th Avenue North.
Several council members said the cause of collisions and near-misses on 13th Avenue North included drivers running a stop sign and restricted sight lines caused by parked vehicles. After discussion, Councilmember Davis moved and a second was made to postpone the no-parking resolution to the council’s Sept. 9 meeting to allow staff time to review corner-setback options and clarify neighborhood preferences. The council voted to postpone the item.
Council directed staff to return with more context on the traffic study, recommended geometry for corner no-parking, and consideration of whether a single-block or systemwide change on Pershing would better address the safety concerns.
