Historic Resources Commission approves signage, fence and demolition measures; continues several applications
Summary
At its Aug. 21, 2025 meeting the Columbus Historic Resources Commission approved staff-recommended sign and fence changes, backed demolition and redevelopment for one property with documentation requirements, recommended zoning variances for a proposed infill project and continued or conditioned several preservation applications.
The Columbus Historic Resources Commission on Aug. 21 approved a set of certificates of appropriateness and recommendations that advance a series of property projects across the city, while sending several items back to staff for additional drawings or documentation.
Commissioners voted to approve a revised sign plan for 1091 S. High Street in the Brewery District, to approve a demolition and conditioned new-construction plan for a property on South Brent Street with a requirement that final window selections come from the city’s approved list (or be reviewed as a test case), and to permit a front-yard fence proposal at 12 Brian Road with conditions on materials, height and finish. The commission also recommended zoning variances for a proposed two-unit infill project on Bridal Road (asking that lot coverage be reduced to 55% or less before final permits), continued a roof/chimney repair application to allow the owner time to supply chimney drawings and shingle selections, and approved a parking/landscape plan and a retaining-wall/fence solution for other properties with staff review required for final details.
Why it matters: the commission’s rulings allow specific exterior changes — signs, fences, demolition and new construction — that affect historic district character and public-facing façades. Several approvals were conditional on follow-up reviews by HRC staff to ensure final materials and drawings match what the commission saw at the hearing.
