Pleasant Grove parks director says Discovery Park playground resurfacing planned for Sept. 25; Cook Park usage high

PLEASANT GROVE, Utah — At the Pleasant Grove City Council work session on Aug. 19, parks staff reported that the contractor responsible for the Discovery Park playground surface has scheduled resurfacing for Sept. 25, following repeated requests from the city.
Parks staff said the playground product carries a 10‑year warranty and that the city is currently in year seven of that warranty period. Staff said the contractor had performed spot repairs in prior years but had not completed a full resurfacing until the contractor informed staff on Aug. 19 that a resurface was planned for Sept. 25.
Parks staff urged patience but said city leaders are prepared to press the contractor if they do not complete the work. “We have a 10‑year warranty on the product. We're in year 7,” the parks representative said. The staff reported that the playground’s top coat typically requires reapplication every two to four years depending on use and that high‑impact areas (for example, slides and common landing zones) wear faster.
On Cook Park, staff said fall sports and events are drawing heavy use and that the park has handled increased traffic and parking needs. Parks staff said a national spikeball tournament and combined events with BYU and a local summer festival have increased wear on some turf areas, but partners and contractors are working with the city to manage impacts. Staff praised cooperation among departments — parks, library and the fire department — for recent events and video‑marketing support.
Staffing and operations: Parks staff reported seasonal employees departing for the school year and said most maintenance work has shifted to full‑time staff. Parks staff said they expect to finalize court resurfacing options with the contractor and will brief the council when legal and procurement issues are resolved.
Ending note: Council members asked to be looped into resurfacing plans and staff said they will provide updates and continue pressing contractors to meet scheduled work.
