The Youth City Council is a three-year program that allows students to explore municipal government, tour public facilities and work alongside elected officials and city staff. Kaylee Morris, vice mayor of the Youth City Council, described the program as an opportunity to build relationships and practical civic skills.
"What makes it special to me now is the community of friends I've built," Morris said. "Youth City Council is a very tight-knit program that we have, and all the people in here are so kind and so respectful. They all have different goals and aspirations, and it's just so fun to get to know people like that."
Morris said one of the program's main objectives is "to provide service and leadership opportunities for our youth student members, assist the youth in learning to identify needs, organizing activities, participate with adult counterparts in city programs, really promoting youth to care about their city and want to make change in their city." She added that the networking and experience are useful after students leave the program. "All of the information and things that you learn in this program, you'll be able to fall back on when you enter the real world and you get your first real professional job," Morris said.
