Board approves expansion of esports competitions to include OSSAA, OKSE and OESL games

The board unanimously approved a motion to add all esports games supported by the OSSAA, the OKSE and the OESL to the district’s approved extracurricular offerings.
Eddie Wright and staff framed esports as an extracurricular opportunity analogous to other team activities, citing competitive tournaments, scholarship pathways and college esports facilities. Wright said multiple organizations offer state competitions and that expanding approvals will allow teams to compete “at the highest level.”
Staff said the district already supports esports with equipment and coaching time; the activity can be scheduled during seventh hour or after school with a coach. Board members asked which games would be included; staff said the specific list is posted by each sanctioning organization and that adoption simply clears the way for teams to participate in those sanctioned competitions.
Board members and staff described local examples of students receiving college support through esports and noted nearby colleges with esports facilities, including the University of Central Oklahoma. The motion passed unanimously.
