County plans Oct. 9 State of the County address with short videos featuring commissioners

Washington County officials said Thursday they will stage a State of the County presentation on Oct. 9 that mixes a chairs address with short video segments of each commissioner highlighting county services.
Sarah Sagan, a county communications staffer, said the production will feature a main address by the chair and brief filmed segments of each commissioner at county facilities. “The state of the county is currently scheduled for October 9,” Sagan said, and staff asked commissioners to pick preferred topics or locations by Tuesday, Aug. 19 so crews can schedule video shoots during the week of Aug. 25.
Commissioners agreed on the events theme—“all about serving people”—but the discussion exposed differing views about tone and topic selection. Vice Chair Nafeez Safai urged the group to consider topics beyond celebratory infrastructure items, arguing the presentation should acknowledge service and funding pressures affecting residents. Safai asked commissioners to provide alternate topic ideas rather than accept the prefilled list as-is.
Philip Bransford, another county communications staffer, said staff proposed a short list of locations and topics—libraries, treatment facilities, recently opened affordable housing projects and the countys access centers—and will coordinate filming and talking points once commissioners identify their segments. Commissioners asked that recordings be scheduled around individual availability; one commissioner asked staff to accommodate later recording requests because of planned absences.
The board asked staff to return a finalized topic list on Aug. 19 through the board communication channel; staff said video shoots will occur beginning the week of Aug. 25 and will wrap up by mid-September. Harrington and other commissioners stressed that the event should present county services clearly to the public while ensuring a unified message about service-level constraints discussed elsewhere in the meeting.

Commissioners said they expect the chair to introduce the videos and asked staff to ensure each segment aligns with the events theme and the boards public messaging.
