Community Board 2 recommends against St. Luke’s proposed mission building design at 497 Hudson; asks for revised submission

Manhattan Community Board 2 on the July meeting recommended denial of the Landmarks Certificate of Appropriateness for a proposed one‑story “mission building” at 497 Hudson Street, part of the Church of St. Luke in the Fields campus. The board voted to ask the applicant to return to the Landmarks subcommittee with a revised design that addresses suggestions from the committee and community; the recommendation passed 24–13.

The board’s action concerned the project’s design and the building’s fit with the Greenwich Village Historic District, not whether the church may operate mission programs at the site. The Landmarks application before the board was limited to whether the proposed building is appropriate to the historic district; the board’s recommendation will be forwarded to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission for final decision.

Supporters said the parish needs a modern, accessible space to house programs that currently operate outdoors or in cramped rooms. “This space is much needed for our activities in the community,” Teresa Goldsboro said, identifying herself as senior warden and a parishioner.
