The Kenosha Public Safety and Welfare Committee voted July 28 to repeal and recreate section 3.23 of the city ordinance so that local rules governing automatic fire sprinkler systems automatically follow changes to Wisconsin state statute.
The change, introduced as an ordinance by Alderman Bridal Amakia and then moved to be sponsored by the Public Safety and Welfare Committee, passed after committee discussion. Fire Department leadership said the revisions remove portions that duplicated state law and retain the city provisions that remain valid.
Fire Chief (name not specified) said the proposed change “will bring us in alignment with Wisconsin state statute regarding automatic sprinkler fire protection systems.” Alan Keller, an intern who helped draft the edits, told the committee the update removes the portions of the local ordinance that were superseded and cleans up wording to keep remaining local provisions consistent.
Committee members asked for clarification about the scope of the edits and confirmed the change was intended to keep the city ordinance following state law if the state statute is amended in the future. The committee approved the sponsor change and the ordinance by voice vote.
No further amendments or a separate second reading were recorded during the meeting. The committee did not identify additional changes beyond the language updates described at the meeting.
