Mayor (unnamed) administered the oath and swore in Sean Cofer as assistant chief and Dietrich Cooper as a sergeant. The mayor and other officials described the promotions as steps in departmental leadership and asked the community to join in congratulating the officers.
The move came as the council and the mayor recognized Chief Thompson, who was introduced as the 2025 Kentucky Police Chief of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Police. Council members and officials said the award reflects on both Thompson and the department.
Mayor (unnamed) praised the officers’ character and work ethic, saying the promotions were earned through “hard work and dedication.” Chief Thompson was also singled out by council members during the information items section, where several speakers called the award a reflection on the department and the city.
The promotions were presented publicly, with family and departmental personnel in attendance. Judge Howard participated in the ceremony, assisting with pins after the oath was administered. The mayor asked those present to join for photographs and offered brief remarks about the department’s leadership pipeline.
No formal votes or ordinance actions were required for the ceremonial promotions. The council moved on to its regular agenda after the ceremony.
