The South Padre Island Convention & Visitors Bureau committee approved a $5,000 marketing allocation for Walk for Women, a volunteer-run nonprofit event scheduled Oct. 10–12 at Louie’s Backyard and the Convention Center. Jules Wilkes, representing Walk for Women, presented an overview and said the three-day program includes a casino night, a walk on Sunday and partner hotel discounts intended to create overnight stays.
Committee members and staff emphasized that marketing grants should be spent on advertising outside the immediate region to attract visitors who will book hotel nights. Committee members asked the organizer to return post-event with completed visitor surveys and a heads-and-beds accounting showing room-night impact. Staff recommended the $5,000 allocation; a committee member moved to approve and another seconded the motion. The motion passed with the committee chair calling the vote in favor (“Aye”) and the motion carrying.
Wilkes said the requested funds would be used primarily for social-media advertising to broaden the event’s reach and encouraged cross-promotion with hotels and vacation-rental managers that plan to offer room-night discounts to attendees. Committee members offered staff assistance on marketing channels and asked for survey data next year to demonstrate outside-market reach and lodging nights generated.
Action: the committee approved $5,000 for Walk for Women marketing.
No further conditions were recorded on the floor other than the committee’s request for post-event reporting to support future funding decisions.
