Operator of Dominus High School asks district to approve temporary lease to avoid displacing students

Dr. Wayne Jones, who identified himself as founder and CEO of Dominus High School, asked the Woodland Hills School District board to consider adding a lease proposal to the agenda so his school could avoid displacing students when its permanent facility is finished.
Jones proposed two temporary options. His preferred option was a lease of the Impact Center for $25,000 per month; he said the arrangement would generate nearly $500,000 in total benefit for the district in the year and would cap enrollment from Woodland Hills at 10 students with waived tuition for those students. As an alternative, Jones offered to operate temporarily at CCAC South; that option would still cap Woodland Hills enrollment at 10 students and waive tuition, but provide roughly half the financial benefit of the Impact Center lease, he said. Jones said Dominus would handle transportation and operational logistics and would ensure no cost impact to the district.
“We’re now just 3 weeks away from our planned September 2 opening, and unfortunately, time is running short,” Jones told the board. He asked the board to add the proposal to the agenda for a vote so the school could proceed and avoid asking more than 100 students and families to find another school for the year.
What happened: Jones made his pitch during the public-comment portion of the Aug. 13 agenda-setting meeting and asked the board to vote that night. The board did not record a vote on the proposal at the Aug. 13 session; administration and board members later continued regular agenda-setting business and directed that voting items would be handled at the next meeting as appropriate.
Why it matters: approving a temporary lease or location would directly affect students’ placement, district facility use and potential revenue. Jones said either option would guarantee Woodland Hills students continued placement without tuition charges and would shift logistical responsibility for transportation and operations to his organization.
