Board receives capital-projects update; drainage, roofing and scoreboard projects move forward

- Martin electrical: Bids were approved by county finance and the electrical work was expected to start within the month; staff said they would manage any additional costs needed to complete the job.
- South floor replacement: The solicitation went out in early September; staff said the extensive work requires tearing up the floor and subfloor and is scheduled for summer 2026 rather than an immediate winter break project.
- North and other projects: North renovation is planned for bid solicitation in January with work targeted for summer; Brown Elementary roof work was underway with an expected completion around fall break, though staff reported a recent setback.
- Martin drainage: Water runoff and basement flooding at Martin were noted as a problem; staff said a civil engineer was scheduled to evaluate and provide a proposal.
Donations and small projects:
- Crab Orchard greenhouse/fencing: A CTE teacher secured a donated chain-link fence and an installer; staff confirmed the material will be accepted only after location and utility clearance checks ("call before you dig") and recommended board approval because a permanent structure on school property becomes district property.
- Stone Memorial scoreboard: A parent/booster group proposed a donor-funded scoreboard for the high school/middle school field. Staff said boosters will install and the district will assume maintenance responsibility once installed and approved.
Security and maintenance planning:
Board members asked staff to include homeland-security assessments as part of the capital planning process; staff responded that annual vulnerability assessments are already conducted and that they would work to add security items to the capital list so the board can budget for them.
Staff said they will circulate an updated capital-projects spreadsheet with timing and estimated costs and added that a fuller presentation from contractors (Excel and McKinstry) will be scheduled for upcoming meetings; trustees asked that the district add security assessment costs and timelines to the capital list for review during budget planning.
