The Town of James Island council voted unanimously to approve three council resolutions during its meeting.
Resolution: additional speed hump on Schooner Road The council approved a resolution supporting an additional speed hump on Schooner Road to address resident safety concerns. The mayor said previous similar speed humps cost about $8,000 apiece when last installed and that final costs might be higher now. Council discussion noted the town’s prior process and thresholds for speed‑hump projects; staff said if the work falls below the town’s $10,000 procurement threshold it would be executed without a separate council appropriation, and if it exceeds that limit staff would return to the council for approval. The council also agreed to refer the request to the South Carolina Department of Transportation for review and coordination.
Resolution: Fort Johnson Road crosswalk safety Council approved a resolution supporting crosswalk safety improvements on Fort Johnson Road near Michael Drive and the adjacent church. Mayor Bridal Lyon said Representative Spencer Wetmore had offered to assist if the town forwards the resolution to her office. Council members described the measure as a livability and safety issue for senior residents and students.
Resolution: fiscal year 2025–26 millage following the 2025 reassessment The council unanimously approved a resolution setting the millage rate for fiscal year 2025–26 following Charleston County’s 2025 reassessment. The mayor described the adjustment as a technical step municipalities undertake after reassessments to maintain revenue parity and avoid unintentional tax increases as property values change.
Votes and procedure Roll‑call votes were taken on the resolutions and recorded as unanimous. The meeting packet and discussion identified next steps for each item: coordinate with DOT on the Schooner hump; forward the Fort Johnson crosswalk request to Representative Spencer Wetmore’s office for assistance; and file the millage resolution per county reassessment requirements.
No ordinances were introduced for first or second reading at the meeting.
