Bath County Schools to switch web filter to GoGuardian, tighten device purchases and remove old student PII

Bath County Schools’ technology staff reported Aug. 25 that the district has implemented a new state-adopted web-filtering system, tightened device purchasing rules for district-managed accounts and plans to remove aged personally identifiable information from student records.
Dr. Griffith presented the annual cybersecurity report required by the Kentucky Department of Education and said the district has moved from Lightspeed to GoGuardian after the state bid process. He said the district already deployed GoGuardian but continues to work through configuration issues.
Dr. Griffith said the district on Jan. 1 implemented a rule that no new district funds be spent on devices that are not Google-compliant for district-managed accounts. That policy is intended to ensure the district can deploy security and monitoring tools (such as GoGuardian) and reduce the risk that noncompliant devices would bypass district protections. He said existing Apple or Kindle devices in the district will be phased out as they reach end of life.
Dr. Griffith also said the district will use a security tool to remove personally identifiable information (PII) from older Infinite Campus accounts, with that cleanup expected in the next three to five weeks. He framed the step as a state-driven requirement to reduce the risk of exposed data for graduates and historical accounts.
No board action was required or taken on the cybersecurity report at the meeting.
