Elko County School District details facilities, safety and OYHE funding plans

Elko County School District staff reported progress on a slate of facilities and school-safety projects and outlined next steps to secure outside funding for remaining work.
District staff said security-camera and improved communication installations are wrapping up at multiple sites and that contractors are completing punch-list work on recently opened facilities. The district is pouring concrete and progressing on the OYHE school site; staff said footings are in and block work will begin for the gym area.
The presentation said the district has applied for a COPS (Community-Oriented Policing Services) grant worth about $500,000 to fund single-point entry systems (magnetic locks, cameras and related hardware). Staff estimated that, at current pricing, that COPS award would cover digital entries at schools but would not fully cover perimeter fencing for all multi-building sites. Staff also described state-level matching funds tied to recent legislation, and said the district has submitted a request to access a $25 million state matching fund to help with capital projects.
Matt, a facilities staff member, and Superintendent CJ Anderson described other ongoing and upcoming projects: a food-science building now in limited use while punch-list items are finished; Old Central’s reroof completed; a grammar school mechanical upgrade to be bid later this year; a planned boiler upgrade at Elko High School; and a proposed simpler mechanical system and mechanical upgrade for Jackpot. The Carlin Combined School playground is being prepared with in-kind and grant support; district and community partners expect equipment and surfacing to be installed within a few weeks.
Board members asked about training for recently installed systems; staff said training is being scheduled with contractors and that district personnel will receive follow-up training and digital guides. On grants and matching funds, staff said the district believes there is a ‘‘clear path forward’’ to secure additional funding to complete elements that were not included in the original OYHE bid package (for example, a CTE building and athletic facilities), but that the district will need to exhaust currently available bond proceeds before drawing on the additional matched funds.
The report noted community support in several towns: Nevada Gold Mines is contributing labor and funding to Carlin’s playground; Spring Creek booster fundraising financed equipment and a press box; and Wells community volunteers have assisted with track improvements. Staff thanked community partners and said the district plans formal recognition events for major contributors.
No formal board action was taken on the facilities update; staff said further agenda items will return as funding decisions crystallize.
