East Aurora High School proposes four course additions, including dual-credit technical math and Forensics II lab

Principal Mitchell and Assistant Principal Stone of East Aurora High School presented proposed course additions and adjustments to the Curriculum Committee intended to meet student elective needs and to align the high school course catalog with next year—s advising timeline.
Mitchell said the district aims to finalize the course catalog in September so students can complete Advise and Sign by October or November. "In order to reach that timeline, it's really important to present any course adjustments by August so we can finalize our course catalog in September," Mitchell said.
The course proposals presented were: - Culinary Arts Fundamentals: described as an elective designed to meet the needs of life-skills students in a "safe and supportive environment" to learn culinary arts. - Forensics II: a one-semester complement to an existing Forensics I class; staff said Forensics II would be a lab science that "will count for the state of Illinois as a lab science." Mitchell said the course offers problem-solving and collaboration skills applicable to college and career paths. - College Preparatory Math: intended for juniors or seniors depending on their pathway, to prepare college-bound students for AP Precalculus or AP Statistics, or for general college-level math. - Technical Math (dual credit): technical math already offered at the school would be proposed for dual-credit articulation, matching offerings at neighboring schools.
Committee members asked clarifying questions during the presentation about the Forensics II course being a lab. Mitchell and Stone said the new courses fill identified gaps, for example providing a second-semester option for students who complete Forensics I in semester one.
These course proposals were presented for review; staff said the district is "right on target" with the planning timeline and will finalize course offerings in advance of student course selection.
No formal vote occurred at this meeting; the committee reviewed the course proposals as part of the catalog finalization process.
