The Community Foundation of Dickinson County presented a $49,513 check to the Harrington City Commission on Aug. 19 to pay for renovation of the restrooms at Father Padilla Park.
The foundation’s executive director, Elizabeth Wiese, told the commission the board chose to fund a single restroom project in Harrington and asked the city to place signage at the park noting the gift. “Doing bathrooms is not glamorous, not exciting,” Wiese said. “But we felt that we had the ability to do this and we’re being proactive.”
Wiese said the foundation asked city staff for cost estimates, selected one site and is presenting the check to the city for the restroom redo. She said the foundation would like a photo opportunity and asked for a sign at the park reading that the restroom was provided by the foundation.
City staff later told the commission the project is expected to start after Labor Day and that the existing restrooms likely will be closed for the remainder of the park season while work proceeds. The city manager said the city will complete sewer and water work first and then turn construction over to the contractor.
The foundation’s donation also came with a public photo and a planned ribbon-cutting when the project is complete, according to meeting remarks.
No formal vote was required for receipt of the donation; the presentation was made during the announcements and community presentations portion of the Aug. 19 meeting.
The foundation and city officials did not provide a contractor name or a firm construction schedule at the meeting; the commission asked staff to coordinate timing and public notice before work begins.
