The Aurora East USD 131 Curriculum Committee reviewed the district’s school improvement plans and heard a recommendation that four designated schools work with WestEd as a learning partner for the coming school year.
John Simpson, a staff member, told the committee that “we do have all of our school improvement plans in their current format, submitted for review here” and described the plans as a continuous, data-driven process tied to district strategic goals, including educational equity and collaborative leadership.
Simpson said the district recommends WestEd for Allen Elementary, Rollins Elementary, Waldo Bridal School, and Cowherd Middle School. He gave cost details: Allen’s WestEd services are estimated at $82,000 for the year and the combined cost for Rollins, Waldo Bridal School, and Cowherd is $66,000, for a total of $148,000. “That would be funded through the 1,003 a grant funds,” Simpson said. He added that schools designated for required learning partner support receive customized coaching from WestEd assigned to the school’s identified data and subgroups.
Committee members asked about the higher cost for Allen Elementary. Simpson explained that Allen is in year one of its designation and will receive more intensive “1.1” support—two coaching sessions per month, including a full in-person day and a virtual session—while the other schools are in a subsequent year and will receive a reduced intensity schedule.
Simpson said the district’s school improvement plans are an ongoing process, not “1 and done,” with school leadership teams monitoring data roughly every 45 days and adjusting plans. He said any financial impacts of school improvement work are covered by the 1003a grant funds.
The committee was told the WestEd recommendation and the related school improvement items will move to the September meeting as action items for committee consideration.
