The San Mateo City Council on Aug. 18 unanimously approved the meeting’s consent calendar by roll call, and later appointed a council liaison to the Police Activities League (PAL).
The consent calendar
City clerk Martin McTaggart read 14 consent items covering routine approvals and contract actions. Items listed included, among others, the Marina Lagoon spot dredging bid rejection; Gateway Park pedestrian bridge replacement agreement; the Los Prados, Kehoe, Kelly and Arroyo lift station rehabilitation project agreement; Central Recreation Center roof improvements contract award; construction special inspection services for the clean water program amendment; and a housing set‑aside fund appropriation. Council took the consent calendar as a single motion and the clerk recorded a 5‑0 roll call: Council member Sverkogoditsky — yes; Council member Fernandez — yes; Council member Diaz Nash — yes; Deputy Mayor Lorraine — yes; Mayor Robert Newsome — yes. City staff noted that most items on the consent calendar are routine procurement, contract awards and budget adjustments to implement ongoing capital programs.
Appointment to Police Activities League liaison
Later in the meeting council considered adding a liaison role for the Police Activities League to the list of external appointments. Council member Danielle Sverkogoditsky (District/role as listed on the dais) was nominated for the liaison role and Council member Fernandez was named the alternate. The motion passed unanimously on a recorded vote of 5‑0.
What this means
Approvals on the consent calendar authorize staff to proceed with negotiations, contract awards and project management for the items listed; individual project pages and staff reports (noted in the agenda packet) will provide project‑level timing and budget details. The PAL liaison appointment designates an on‑call council point person for that outside organization; the liaison role varies by organization but typically includes periodic contact, attendance at meetings when appropriate and serving as a council point of contact for coordination.
