Canary Water Control District sets $100 assessment, corrects public-hearing date

The Canary Water Control District board approved a resolution establishing an estimated $100 assessment rate for water management system assessments for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, 2025, and directed staff to prepare an assessment roll and to hold a public hearing.

The resolution, described at the meeting as covering water control and drainage services within the district’s geographic boundaries, also authorizes notice of the hearing, provides for severability and sets an effective date. Staff said the original version of the resolution named the wrong hearing date and that it was corrected to Sept. 12, 2025, at 5:01 p.m.

Board members moved and seconded the motion to approve the resolution and approved it by roll call. Supervisor Bustamante voted yes; Supervisor Louis Ricketts voted yes; Vice Chair Bordelon voted yes; and Chair Lewis voted yes. Supervisor Martin was absent. Finance staff Missy P. Henderson was noted as present to answer questions about the item.

During administrative comments following the vote, Administrator May said the district has begun placing small plastic boxes on canal signage that hold cards recording when crews clean or spray each canal. "We just started installing those today," May said, adding the cards now let residents see both the scheduled cleaning and the date when cleaning or spraying occurred.

The board’s action sets the estimated assessment rate at $100 and directs staff to prepare the assessment roll and publish notice of a public hearing, which the board’s staff corrected in the resolution to Sept. 12, 2025, at 5:01 p.m. No additional fiscal details or parcel-level assessment amounts were provided at the meeting.
