Tangipahoa Parish Council on July 28 voted to seek bids to replace a Council on Aging transit vehicle and to seek bids for the West Mulberry Street extension, introduced several ordinances that will be heard at future public hearings, and approved a local liquor license.
The council approved a motion to solicit bids for a Ford Transit T-350 to replace one of the parish's transit buses used by the council on aging; the motion was moved by Mister Joseph and seconded by Mister Wells and adopted by roll call. Council members discussed that the fleet currently runs on the low end of three vehicles parked at the Claussen lot.
Council members also authorized seeking bids for the West Mulberry Street extension in Amite, contingent on final state approval of plans. The president's report noted the project would extend West Mulberry behind the Walgreens property and tie back into Highway 16 to provide an alternative downtown route; the motion passed after a roll-call vote.
During regular business the council introduced TP Ordinance No. 25-20, an ordinance to acquire ownership of right-of-way for the State Line Road bridge replacement project (H015014) in Kentwood; the introduction will be followed by a public hearing on Aug. 11. The council also introduced TP Ordinance No. 25-23, which would exempt the parish's one-cent sales tax on purchases of firearms, ammunition and hunting supplies during Louisiana's Second Amendment weekend sales-tax holiday in September 2025; that introduction passed by roll call.
The council granted a retail alcohol license (BMS Neighborhood Cafe LLC, 19410 Highway 16, Amite) for class B beer/package and class A/B liquor. Members also approved July 14 meeting minutes and agreed to pull multiple items (including an item from the Louisiana Housing Corporation) from the agenda at the request of staff.
The council recessed into executive session late in the meeting to discuss litigation; after returning from executive session the council voted to place a tentative settlement about term limits on the next meeting agenda for public discussion (see separate article).
