The Macomb County public safety committee voted 13-0 to forward a budget amendment and contract amendment that would add two deputies and one vehicle to the Macomb Township law enforcement contract, effective Oct. 1, 2025.
Commander Ambrose of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office presented the request, describing Macomb Township’s direct request for two deputy positions and one vehicle. Commander Ambrose told the committee the total contract amount, prorated for the three-year term, is $936,853 and that a related county budget amendment for fiscal 2025 would increase the sheriff’s department budget by $128,634 to cover the prorated cost for Oct.–Dec. 2025.
The committee’s discussion centered on staffing and timing. Commissioner Oyo asked whether the two positions had already been filled and what would happen if the department could not hire in time for the Oct. 1 start. Commander Ambrose said the positions had not yet been filled and that the sheriff’s office would use overtime to maintain contracted staffing levels if hiring delays occurred. He noted the department has been managing staffing shortages since 2020 but that “our priority is always to ensure the contracting communities get what they want.” He also said the department was “97% fully staffed” at the time of the presentation and that additional hires and academy classes were in process.
Commissioner Hall moved the item to the full board with support from Commissioner Van Sickle. The committee approved the motion, 13-0.
Votes and next steps: The requested budget amendment and contract amendment will be forwarded to the full Board of Commissioners for final approval. Commander Ambrose and sheriff’s office staff indicated that if hiring is incomplete by the Oct. 1 start date the county will staff positions with overtime until full hires are in place; commissioners asked staff to provide hiring and timeline details to the board as requested.
