The proposal calls for removing a brick patio and a picket fence installed around the 1906 Craftsman house and replacing those elements with a slightly elevated wood deck and a pergola above it. The applicant intends the pergola’s square pillars and the new railing to match the house’s front-pillars and will paint the rails to match the home. Commission staff presented the application and noted the existing brick patio sits at ground level, making the outdoor area difficult to use. The applicant proposed raising the deck to provide clearance from the ground and adding a pergola for shade. Staff said the proposal also replaces a wrought-iron railing — which staff described as not consistent with the Craftsman style of the house — with square wooden rails.
A commissioner asked whether the pergola roof would be wood or corrugated metal. A staff member answered that the roof would be corrugated metal while the rest of the structure would be wood. Vice Chair Stone recused herself from the item because she is the applicant.
After a motion to approve and a second, the commission voted in favor of the recommendation by a 5-0 tally. Commission staff described the action as a recommendation to the City Council rather than final approval.
The commission packet included drawings showing the proposed changes and a new drawing submitted by the applicant that staff said was distributed to commissioners before the vote.
