Union leaders report negotiation talks and Leffingwell teachers report missing Envision Math materials

Ivan Pastrano, chapter president for CSEA East Whittier Chapter 87, said classified‑unit negotiations have resumed and that the parties are discussing money and how compensation fits into the district's fiscal stabilization plan. "We have started negotiations... we're talking about money every year and then we talk about, okay, well, money is one thing, but then we're also looking at a fiscal stabilization plan," Pastrano told the board.
Brent Vogelmann, president of the East Whittier Education Association (EWEA), told the board that Leffingwell (the elementary school represented at the meeting) has not received Envision Math materials for its kindergarten, first- and second‑grade classes. "It is not a new curriculum," Vogelmann said, summarizing that teachers were told materials had been delivered but classrooms reported they did not have them; the shortfall affects 10 classes, Vogelmann said. Teachers are photocopying workbook pages to bridge the gap at the start of the year.
Vogelmann asked the board to help resolve the supply issue so teachers would not have to produce photocopies and could use the district-provided curriculum materials. Board members acknowledged the request and thanked staff for efforts to resolve technology and material issues at the start of the year.
CSEA also congratulated long‑service employees recognized at the meeting and noted the union's interest in reaching agreements that support district fiscal stability while addressing employee compensation.
