Stillwater High principal and students were recognized for top national FCCLA finishes; a parent used public comment to urge the board to fund a dedicated STEM lab and workspace for long-term student projects.
The board opened the meeting with recognitions for student achievements and a public comment about STEM facilities.
Walter Howe, principal at Stillwater High School, introduced Kinsley Camp, the new family and consumer sciences teacher, and recognized students Laura Bennett and Addison Harmon for placing among the top national finishers at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Orlando. Laura finished 30th in the Leadership event and serves in chapter leadership roles; Addison finished 20th in Event Management and is headed to college to study education, Howe said.
During public comment, Stacy Laxton urged the board to support a dedicated STEM space. ‘‘Our STEM programs are growing. We have students designing robots, writing code, and running experiments that further spark their curiosity. But here's the challenge, our students are doing all of this in spaces that were not meant for this kind of work,’’ Laxton said. She asked the board to support creating a safe, organized environment where tools and materials remain accessible and students can work on long-term projects without interruptions.
The board received the recognitions and the public comment; no board action on the STEM request was recorded during the meeting.
