Commissioners said residents asked law enforcement and the county attorney how immigration-related actions are being handled locally. County officials, including County Manager Becker and Ramsey County Attorney John Choi, told the board they will follow existing law and protect individuals’ rights to the extent permitted under the law. Commissioners emphasized that executive orders are not the same as statutes and that many legal questions are currently being litigated.
Commissioners encouraged residents who want to take action on federal policy to contact members of Congress and suggested focusing outreach beyond local constituencies to districts represented by members whose votes could affect national policymaking. No new county policies or changes to law enforcement procedure were announced during the meeting record.
