Commissioners approve resolution allowing community corrections staff to carry firearms with training requirements

Adams County commissioners approved a resolution authorizing specified members of the county Community Corrections program to carry firearms while on duty, subject to training and annual requalification approved by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board and any additional local requirements.

Clayton presented a draft resolution that names specific Community Corrections staff members and conditions authorization on successful completion of firearms training approved by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board and any additional training the sheriff or Community Corrections director deem necessary. The resolution requires continued authorization to be contingent on required annual requalification and any refresher training.

Ian, the Community Corrections director, said his office already holds quarterly firearms training tailored to the type of close‑quarters situations staff may encounter during home visits or in-office incidents, and that annual qualification has been in place since the sheriff’s office authorized carry. The sheriff’s office and county leadership framed the resolution as a formalization of training expectations and liability management: written training and documented requalification create a clearer administrative record than informal arrangements.

The board moved, seconded and passed the resolution; commissioners recorded a unanimous vote. Staff will record the measure as Resolution 2025-2 and coordinate documentation of required training and requalification with the sheriff’s office and Community Corrections.
